Mishio Yamanaka is a Ph.D. student in U.S. history at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. From Japan’s motor city, Toyota, she earned her B.A. in American Studies from Nanzan University, Nagoya and M.A. in U.S. history from Kyoto University, Kyoto. Moving to North Carolina in 2011, she studies race and ethnic relations in the U.S. South in the late nineteenth century with an emphasis on the community of Creoles of color in New Orleans. As a Carolina Digital Humanities Initiative fellow, she is also interested in methodologies of digital humanities. She plans a mapping project where one can visually analyze the patterns of segregation and integration and the transformation of race and ethnic relations in the Crescent city.
